Because a PET(Positron Emission Tomography) scan needs radioactive materials with what is called a positron decay and this process produces two gamma rays moving in opposite directions, which can trace the location of the tracer radiopharmaceuticals better, and these radiopharmaceuticals have short life time, and are more expensive to produce, (PET has to be close to the facility that makes the tracers). The only way to truly diagnose is on autopsy. MRI is the bet study for viewing structures of the brain with incredible detail. Function, PETscan and Functional MRI look at which areas of the brain are metaboliziong sugars the fastest (which areas are most active), however these tests are very rare and used for research purposes almost exclusively.
