Computed tomography (CT) is a medical imaging method employing tomography created by computer processing. Digital geometry processing is used to generate a three-dimensional image of the inside of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation.

CT produces a volume of data which can be manipulated, through a process known as "windowing", in order to demonstrate various bodily structures based on their ability to block the X-ray beam. Although historically the images generated were in the axial or transverse plane, orthogonal to the long axis of the body, modern scanners allow this volume of data to be reformatted in various planes or even as volumetric (3D) representations of structures. Although most common in medicine, CT is also used in other fields, such as nondestructive materials testing. Another example is archaeological uses such as imaging the contents of sarcophagi or the DigiMorph project at the University of Texas at Austin which uses a CT scanner to study biological and paleontological specimens.

Usage of CT has increased dramatically over the last two decades. An estimated 72 million scans were performed in the United States in 2007.

Is there an inexpensive way to get an abdominal CT scan?
Q. I am a Navy recruiter. An applicant needs to be cleared of kidney stones by abdominal CT scan before he can enlist. He doesn't have insurance right now. How can he get a CT scan without paying over a thousand dollars?

A. He should get overseas and do it there or Mr. Recruiter can do it inside the recruiting office! Insurance is a pain.

How dangerous is getting a brain CT scan?
Q. I was hit in the head a few weeks ago and went to the hospital and got a brain CT scan. How much radiation was I exposed to?
Asked by Marc - Mon Jun 7 06:38:33 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not enough to even consider. Sure, if you take up stunt sports and need one every week, you might want to consider a new career, but exposure to such levels of radiation a few times in life is hardly a blip in terms of how much it increases your lifetime risk of cancers. If you want to lower your risk, think about keeping your diet healthy and staying active, which are much more important contributors to lowering your lifetime risk of cancers and many other conditions! Don't waste your time on silly concerns like this: look at what you CAN change.
